Boxengasse Megaphonics ‘23

Megaphonics (formerly known as OilCooled) has always escaped us here at SHIFT, clashing with other shows, family matters or long-standing plans for the last few years, resulting in plenty of jealousy when the inevitable tidal-wave of Porsche-centric content made its way onto social media.

Thankfully, the stars aligned for us this year, and we were able to finally attend what was the biggest and best-yet iteration of Megaphonics, including the opening of two new buildings/spaces as part of the Boxengasse campus.

With a brief shower in the morning threatening to put a dampener on things, the skies quickly cleared and it ended up being a gorgeous day, with the event packed to the gills with one-off builds, Le Mans and IMSA legends, and an overall level of quality and curation that other shows could learn a thing or two from, particularly in terms of the main show area layouts - you can tell the organiser is a keen creative!

Without further ado, please enjoy our coverage from Megaphonics 2023.

Perhaps the most famous driveway on Instagram? The tree-lined approach to Boxengasse is certainly iconic.

The Black Betty & Co workshops - the name of Boxengasse’ proprietor Frank Cassidy’s car collection and business - are an absolute overload in the best possible way. From his infamous orange RSR tribute to liveried-up track cars, resto-mods and preservation jobs, this space is pure nirvana for anyone with even a passing interest in the Porsche marque.

The team at Porsche Classic also brought out the big guns for Megaphonics, including a few period racing icons, along with hosting a few client/customer cars, including a very lovely 911SC nicknamed ‘Thermidor’ on account of its interior colour…

Rarity in a sleek and purple form… under-the-radar RS goodness.

It may not have been the real-deal, but this ICON 917 recreation was still a show-stopping treat.

If a standard turbo-body or RS Porsche isn’t quite wide enough for you, then this may be the answer - Akira Nakai’s famous RWB builds.

At the centre of the Boxengasse complex, alongside the aforementioned Black Betty & Co workshops, sits Autofarm - one of the UK’s premier Porsche specialists. With a business spanning numerous buildings, it was a photographer’s dream!

Historic Group C was also very well represented in one of the new Boxengasse buildings…

All the colours of the rainbow!

One of two major new buildings created as part of the Boxengasse expansion programme, this sizeable unit played host to some of the most historically important, rarest and most eye-wateringly expensive Porsches on display at Boxengasse 2023. Frankly, we could’ve quite happily spent the whole day in this one room alone!

Whilst 2023 was our first year attending Boxengasse, it certainly won’t be our last. It’s easy to see why this event is regularly labelled the UK’s premier Porsche show, and with good reason; representing every level of enthusiast and hobbyist from a standard 996 and tatty (but much-loved, and equally cool) air-cooled 911, all the way up to historically significant Group C Le Mans cars and multi-million-pound RS models, Frank and the Boxengasse team really do know how to throw a brilliant event, and we’ll be back for 2024…
